The Best Internal Wall Insulation for Old Properties?
Просмотров 202 тыс.Месяц назад
How I insulated my old property with a breathable internal wall insulation. So after years of trying out different internal wall insulation systems at my old victorian cottage (which has no cavity walls) I recently decided it was time to find a more appropriate, breathable system. After exhaustive research I came up with what I think is the perfect retrofit internal wall insulation system. In t...

What is "White Spirits"? We don't have that label in the US. Is it mineral sprits? You say "Bonnet", I say hood! Same thing. Just asking for clarification. Thanks for the information and technique. I truly appreciate it.
Hi there. You sanded it down 5 minutes after filling it? I thought it was 30 min drying time?
Hi I want to hang a 25 kg Mirror to my dry hollow wall ? which best drywall anchor ?
that's cool mate, but who has time for this? Too much effort and too many tools required
Does this method work the same for sanded grout caulk?
Hi, dont' know if you check your comments on old videos, but if you do, do you happen to know if the motor for the HVR200 and HVR160 is the same or different parts? Thanks
This is such a helpful video, lots of great tips, thank you. Particularly helpful for me was the advice for the hot water tap if you can't find the valve to turn it off - I don't have an isolation valve (old house) but the suggestion to turn off mains water and drain hot water tank is perfect 👌
Those amazon hygrometers are awful. Readings between them differ greatly. One is at 62, anofher at 52 another at 64. So you dont get an accurate reading. Same brand, same devices. It's a struggle. Opening windows helps in winter but apparently the RH goes up in the sunmer. I have a dehumidifier, but it doesnt bring the RH down that much, but it does do a bit and definitely collects a lot of water. One thing that I have found quite helpful is pointing a fan towards the window. Almost works like a air conditioner in a way, and brings the RH down a few percent. Still, wish getting an accurate hygrometer was easy (not £200).
Just seen this video, great video, totally agree with everything yoy say. Also thank you for highlighting the HomeAssistant integration that we (Myself and Mark Parker) have created for Home Assistant!
Been a decorator for about 40 years now and I must say the Zinsser BIN is a game changer , it’s got me out of a few painting issues . Worth every penny 🙏🏻👍🏻
Wow, your work ethic is immense. Good work Charlie!!! I renovated my first property 3 years ago, a 2 bed flat on the third floor with no lift....VERY Hard!!! But this is a while different ball game!!!
For smoothing tools I use Reeech sealant smoothers. 3 little plastic smoothers and choice of 12 profiles. Cheap available from most places like screwfix AND made in Britain ❤
As always great content. This guy has got to be one of the best DIY video makers. He seems to understands his audience and pitches his explanations at the right level.
Been painting our pebble dash with sandtex trade ultra smooth. Dries to form a rubbery finish and found the sprayer will fill some cracks. Definitely easier for for people like me suffering from carpal tunnel and seems like you get a good thick coat compared to a roller which can pull the chippings off. In some cracks i also bedded a few chippings in with filler. And on some bare patches i gunned a few blobs of filler that look like chippings - if you do this low down you need a few coats to make it more convincing but works fine for bits that are higher up. Only the 3rd coat to do in a few areas, glad it's done before it gets too hot. I bought a Wagner 350M, it sprays 40% diluted first coat on fine, but struggles a bit with the 10%. Have to do it a little at a time but keeps you being thorough.
Hi hinges for a flush fitted wardrobe doors what will I need please
Terrible audio
I am 87,and cant do any of the things I have seen⁰
Excellent video! Thank you for your time to created it, really appreciated. I'm going to order one of these now as I'm really struggling with my dulled kitchen knives. Thank you, All the best
Hi guys does anyone know if the aerogel backed plasterboard is a breathable product? I wanted to fit this to my house but it doesnt have any cavity. If anyone has used this type of stuff previously let me know, it is expensive but its less than 20mm thick so its great for tight spaces. Thanks
I try to follow you. But stopped as you are going too fast, showing details in a split second. Very irritating. Are you doing a race, trying to show as much as possible in a short as possible time?
Just out of interest.. does this feel warmer then the other room with the pir insulation?
Charie you are hero!!!.🎉🎉🎉
Thanks Charlie. As always your videos are spot on.
Great commentary, no waffle and excellent editing
could i just use battens rather than the swip system ones
Can I cycle on just the motor without pedaling for short durations of time??
When’s the next video coming out seem to be missing a long video
I did large format tiles in my bathroom. Absolute nightmare. Do not recommend.
The newer thompsons water seal is water based and allows your bricks to breath still, but i dont think its as good at preventing moisture seeping in as it was when it was oil based
Hey Charlie, great video. Did you consider anything like an breathable insulated lime plaster system? I noticed you said in another comment that the exterior wasn't breathable at all, so an insulated lime plaster system which is directly bonded to the wall leaves no space for mould to develop. We had a conservation surveyor look at our Victorian basement conversion and they recommended this sort of thing (Rinzaffo MGN render + Termointonaco 2020 MGN insulating plaster + optional top coat of aerogel lime plaster + clay based paint). Apparently they use it in conservation in Venice on old buildings where moisture is a massive problem.
Great video and after seeing it I definitely won't be buying a conversion kit because I didn't have near that diy improv and skill so I will be just having to buy a whole ebike. I'm glad I watched first.
Very helpful - thanks. I finally got the elements installed. An eBay vendor first sent the incorrect elements, for 240 rather than 120 volts, and the North American vendor for Dualit did not include instructions with the Dualit elements. A 1/4" wrench works perfectly on those tiny nuts.
Do you have a video on how to create your jig?
Have you sealed the Indian stone since this video? If so, what product? We’ve had ours done and the colours when wet are far superior and sealers seem to aid this also. Be interested to hear your experience. Thanks.
Thanks, the perfect solution to a challenge on my build
QUESTION: I have been umming and arring about whether to DPM or breathable on my underfloor heating system in my 200 sandstone cottage. I have seen a few videos online where people have installed DPM under a concrete floor and the damp has travelled horizontally under the DPM to the edge of the slab and crept into and up the walls straddling the concrete slab/screed. Would you so a video with a thermal imaging camera to see if your DPM has done something similar in your cottage? P.S Your videos have been a god send for my DIY project on my old cottage.
the easiest way is to use the correct MDF MRMDF. with a water base primer
I prefer Zinsser BIN even on MR MDF
"whilst the ceiling board was, well...still a bit emotional" Haha. A nice reminder that whilst we always see Charlie in good spirits throughout his videos, there is undoubtedly many occasions of stress, swearing and no doubt some tears and feelings of hopelessness.
Yep there have been many of those moments on this job!! 👊
I used BIN to prime a bedroom wall which had been covered with photographs stuck to the wall with blu tak. After cleaning the visiblle stins with CT1 Solvent Cleaner, I primed the walls with BIN as it seemed to have a reputation as the most effective stain blocker. The work was done in December. During the warm weather over the bank holiday weekend the walls have crazed under the topcoat. I would not recommend BIN as a whole wall primer - it is too brittle. Indeed Zinnser have told me that 123 is their go to for blu tak stains.
Thanks for passing that on. Sorry to hear that happened.
Great video. Very well explained. Thanks.
Thanks 👊
QQ: Any recommendations on how to smooth/sand off the repaired cracks on houses were the render is smooth? These videos have been amazing. Thank you.
You could try a random orbit sander with these amzn.to/3QPShEX I sanded my concrete floor recently to prepare it for the tiling, with these and they worked well.
Thanks
You're welcome.👊
Did you say through 20mm of steel? 20mm?!!?! Do you know the density? I tried using these screws through 12mm (46 density I think) and it was a complete and utter nightmare!
Glad to see a small update with the hottub lid. I must have missed a video about the base insulation. A proper update would be welcome, to highlight what worked and what didn't, for the benefit of anyone who might just be starting out along this insulation route.
The base insulation didn't work well and the foil came off on the decking. I just stick to using the rubber mat that came with the hot tub these days.
